A lovely random encounter last weekend at Made Brighton has led to a surprising collaboration ! Rachael Clunie was on the stand opposite at the show: she trained in Paris as a couture milliner making extraordinary creations which, surprisingly, look really amazing when combined with ceramics !! I took part in my first Potfest event back in 2021, in Penrith, and sold this tile panel to a couple from lovely Hebden Bridge; the buyers kindly sent me a photo but it was swallowed up in my very unruly (over 9000!) photos app… I found it again this morning and it brought back so many memories : the image is of a field that I used to walk past with my dog when I lived in southern Burgundy, France. I loved to watch how the nature and structure, the soil and the tones of the field changed throughout the year. My favourite time was on those freezing days when the trees and the ploughed earth were bare and it became a playground for the crows … made by hand from earthenware clay and carved #earthenwaretiles #ceramicdesign #handmadetiles #frenchfields #winterscenes #sgraffitodesign @london.potters @dockyard_ceramics_studio @potfest.co.uk @craftpotters @craftscouncil

Really pleased with this design, but to be honest I have no idea how successfully it will fire as it’s a new slip that I haven’t tried on a vertical surface before… fingers crossed it won’t move too much and that all that careful carving will remain nice and sharp. The branches depicted are of larch trees in winter, photographed in the woodlands of Cumbria, and the vase itself is assembled from two large thrown pieces with a thrown neck and extruded handles #stonewarevase #amphora #wintertrees #ceramicdesign #sgraffitopottery #larchtree @tam_ceramics_london @skylark_galleries_london @london.potters @potfest.co.uk @craftpotters @craftscouncil @memoryofjane thanks for the music xx

As part of the Skylark Gallery artists collective I get to display my ceramics this month in the window on Gabriel’s Wharf, just a step away from the banks of the River Thames, the National Theatre, and all the other amazing aspects of London’s Southbank. This display features my black stoneware Octopus series, as well as more of my Koi designs. Each piece is individually thrown and carved with sgraffito decoration. This is the tile panel that any visitors to last month’s Potfest in the Pens and Potfest Scotland will have seen me working on: I made them in my studio in London from stoneware clay, painted them with cobalt oxide slip and transported them to the north of the country to demonstrate the sgraffito carving technique. They are now finished, glazed with a satin white dolomite glaze that draws out lilac tones in the cobalt wildflowers and grasses. Later this week they will be heading off to their new home in southern France to be integrated into an interior design scheme.
